If your boil is in early stage means if it is small hen you can treat it at your home by using hot application. But if you have the larger boils and carbuncles (a group of boils) then you have to go for the drainage to let pus come out. Surgery is generally a technical term in use. In this doctor just use a needle or syringe to cut the skin and to let out the pus. You can use the home remedies or homeopathic remedies also at this stage to get rid from the boil. But if boils become Cysts (then it is highly necessary for the surgery to get relief from the pain.
